This red is somewhat unusual in that it is 100% Carignan, where many Montsant wines are more Garnacha focused. Still, it’s Montsant so expect this to be punchy. Carignan is known for showcasing red fruit flavours, but the heat of mediterranean Spain has pushed this wine into dark fruit territory, black cherries and plums. The spicy notes of Carignan have shifted as well, more licorice than cinnamon. Tobacco and smoke round the palate out nicely. For all the richness I’m describing, this wine remains quite easily drinkable.
