This Malbec comes from the Famatina Valley of Argentina, which if you haven’t heard of before, is understandable. My WSET 3 notes just say “it’s a place that exists”. This is obscure territory. But hey, this little wine that could picked up silver at the International Wine Challenge! Wine judging is never easy but IWC does a lot of things right, like being 100% blind, and panels of 3-4 judges working as a team to rate. For this $19 Malbec to grab silver it means it’s punching way above its weight class, and it does!
An elegant, intensely rich, full bodied red, this wine is made with hand-picked, ripe, organic grapes from 30-year-old vines grown at high altitude. It is full of delicious silky-smooth fruit flavours, with enticing hints of violets, plums and cherries and on the palate, it is full and long with supple, sweet tannins and a complex finish. A fabulous wine to partner with a juicy rump steak, as well as other grilled or roasted red meats and tomato-based pasta dishes and cheese.
